What are interest Groups

What are Interest Groups?

“It’s a great way to get to know other local people in a convivial, friendly environment.”

Interest Groups are meetings of members with common interests. Members decide how to share, enjoy and develop their interest together in a friendly atmosphere.

Groups are:

  • For members
  • Set up and run by members
  • Mostly between 6-10 members in size
  • Usually in ‘home groups’ ie in members’ homes
  • Larger groups meet in other premises eg the Recorded Music Group of up to 20, some Walking groups and the Horticultural Group.
  • The Sunday Lunch Groups meet in different local and country venues.
  • Meetings are usually once a month

As a Member of Dartford u3a, you can join as many groups as your time permits (dependant on vacancies).

The Groups page has an alphabetical List of Groups and the timetable available on that page is a downloadable pdf. which shows groups by days of the week. This can also be found using the blue links for individual group pages.

Groups include:

  • Drawing and Crafts
  • visual arts - Photography, Film and Art Appreciation
  • History - general as well as Local, the Tudors and the Victorians
  • Reading, writing, books and languages
  • 6x Walking groups - for different levels of stamina, pace and distance
  • 3x Tai Chi groups
  • 2x Indoor Games groups - board and card games

Who runs the Interest Group?

Members run and manage the groups themselves. It’s all about team work. One person may volunteer to arrange the meetings, someone else to provide accommodation, another to help with refreshment. Meetings are planned together. It needs everyone to contribute and actively participate.

Do I pay more to join an Interest Group?

No. There is no extra charge beyond the Membership fee but members generally give the group host 50p or so to cover refreshment costs when provided in home groups.

Other costs arise for materials eg in baking or crafts, or your group goes on visits - you cover your own costs.
